Title: Echoes of Su Yu‑Kou White PorcelainNews Summary
The Su Yu‑Kou porcelain kiln site lies deep in the Helan Mountains of Ningxia. It was first discovered in 2017, and from 2021 to 2025 the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, together with Fudan University, carried out systematic excavations. So far eight kiln‑furnaces have been uncovered, and around the kiln complex archaeologists have found the remains of contemporaneous pits where porcelain clay, coal, quartz, limestone and other minerals were mined—a combination that is unique in Chinese ceramic archaeology.
A rich variety of objects has been recovered. In addition to everyday bowls, plates and cups, the site yielded large items such as flower‑rimmed vases, plum‑shaped vases, ewers, jars, and even white‑porcelain tiles. The porcelain body is pure, fine‑grained, and the glaze shows a subtle bluish tint in the white.
Based on the stratigraphy and the artifacts, the kiln appears to have begun firing in the early Western Xia period and to have ceased operation in the late Western Xia period. Some of the recovered containers bear the character “官” (official) on their seals, indicating that this was a royal‑court kiln of the Western Xia—an “imperial” workshop. The archaeological team also noted that kiln technology, while rooted in northern traditions, borrowed heavily from the advanced techniques and aesthetic sensibilities of southern centers such as Jingdezhen. This reflects the cultural exchange that flourished during the Two‑Song era. To protect the site, part of the excavated area has been back‑filled, and a display has been set up on the original location.
Reflection and Insight
The discovery of the kiln complex does more than bring ancient pots back into the light; it bears witness to the continuity of craft and way of life across centuries. The meticulous work of the potters, the coordinated mining of raw materials, and the handed‑down production processes all illustrate how small, faithful efforts and mutual help sustain daily life.
Scripture reminds us of a basic principle: we must hear and then do in order to do things well. May we, in our everyday lives, be honest, diligent, and cooperative, taking care of the little tasks before us. In doing so, we honor both tradition and the future.
Scripture
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” — Matthew 7:24 (NLT)
